Canadian resume format guide
Structure, length, personal details, and conventions for an English-language resume in Canada, with the differences from other countries made explicit.

The standard shape
A Canadian resume is a concise marketing document, not a life history. The dominant format is reverse-chronological: contact details, an optional two-to-three-line summary, experience with accomplishments, education, then skills and certifications. Letter-size pages (8.5 by 11 inches), one to two pages total.
If you are arriving from a country where CVs run long, the compression is the biggest adjustment: Canadian employers expect selected evidence, not completeness. A ten-year career fits on two pages by including only what supports the target job.
What to leave off
Canadian human rights law restricts what employers may consider in hiring, and the resume convention follows: no photo, no date of birth, no marital or family status, no nationality or immigration details beyond eligibility to work if you choose to state it, and no full street address. City and province are enough.
Include a professional email and phone number. A LinkedIn URL or portfolio link is common and useful when it is current.
- No photograph.
- No age or date of birth.
- No marital status, dependants, or religion.
- No Social Insurance Number, ever.
- Street address unnecessary; city and province suffice.
Language and spelling
Canadian English spelling (colour, centre, organize) is standard but not policed; consistent US spelling will not cost you an interview. Match the language of the posting. Bilingual roles, especially in Quebec and the federal government, may warrant a French version, which is outside this product's English-only launch scope.
Dates written as 'March 2022 - June 2024' avoid the day-month-year ambiguity between numeric formats.
Credentials and references
List post-secondary education with institution, credential, and completion year. Foreign degrees are fine to list as earned; add a Canadian equivalency assessment (such as WES) only if you have one and the employer asks.
'References available upon request' is obsolete; leave it off and have a separate references document ready. Do not attach references to the resume itself.
Tailoring still decides the outcome
Format opens the door; relevance gets you through it. Every application still deserves a pass that reorders and rewords your true experience against the specific posting. Our tailoring workflow handles this from one approved career record, in Canadian or US conventions, with every claim checked against facts you approved.
Common questions
How long should a Canadian resume be?
One page for early careers, two pages for most experienced professionals. Going past two pages is reserved for academic CVs and some government competitions that explicitly ask for detail.
Do Canadian employers want a cover letter?
Often yes, especially outside tech. When a posting mentions one, treat it as required. Keep it under a page and consistent with the resume.
Is a resume different from a CV in Canada?
In Canadian usage, 'resume' means the short tailored document and 'CV' usually means the long academic format. Postings outside academia that say CV almost always mean the short resume.
